Appliance Repair in Spain - What Is Worth Fixing and What to Replace

Appliances break down in Spain just as they do at home - but the repair market works differently

A washing machine that stops mid-cycle, a fridge that stops cooling, a dishwasher that will not drain - appliance breakdowns are a normal part of property ownership on the Costa del Sol, just as anywhere else. What is different in Spain is the repair market. Independent repair technicians - tecnicos de electrodomesticos - are more prevalent here than in the UK, and repair is often a genuinely cost-effective option rather than an automatic path to replacement.

How appliance repair works in Spain

Appliance repair in Spain falls into two main categories:

  • Manufacturer or brand authorised service - the official service network for major brands including Bosch, Siemens, Balay, Samsung, LG, and others. Work carried out by authorised technicians uses genuine parts and maintains any remaining manufacturer warranty. Typically more expensive than independent repair but appropriate where warranty coverage matters.
  • Independent repair technicians - tecnicos independientes who work across multiple brands. Generally cheaper than authorised service, often faster, and in many cases equally competent for standard repairs. Parts may be third-party rather than genuine manufacturer parts.

What appliance repairs cost in Spain

  • Call-out and diagnosis fee: 50 to 100 euros - confirm whether this is deducted from the repair cost if you proceed
  • Washing machine repair (pump, bearing, drum seal): 100 to 300 euros depending on part and labour
  • Dishwasher repair (pump, control board, door latch): 80 to 250 euros
  • Fridge or freezer repair (thermostat, compressor, seal): 100 to 350 euros
  • Oven repair (element, thermostat, door seal): 80 to 200 euros

When to repair and when to replace

A useful rule of thumb: if the repair cost exceeds 50 percent of the cost of a new equivalent appliance, replacement is usually the better decision. Other factors worth considering:

  • Age of the appliance - an appliance within its expected lifespan is worth repairing. An appliance near or beyond that point is likely to develop further faults.
  • Parts availability - for older or discontinued models, parts may be unavailable or have long lead times.
  • Energy efficiency - older appliances are significantly less energy efficient than current models. The running cost saving from a new A-rated appliance can justify replacement even where repair is technically possible.
  • Hard water damage - across much of the Costa del Sol, hard water accelerates wear on washing machines, dishwashers, and water heaters. If hard water damage is the cause of a failure, the same problem is likely to recur.

Buying replacement appliances in Spain

For replacement appliances, the main options on the Costa del Sol are Mediamarkt, El Corte Ingles, and Leroy Merlin for larger appliances. Delivery and installation services are widely available. Spanish appliances use the standard European Schuko plug and run on 220-240V.
