Finding a Carpenter in Spain - Joinery, Fitted Furniture and What to Check
What a carpenter in Spain does and where to find a good one
The carpintero, carpenter, covers a range of work on the Costa del Sol that spans everything from fitting doors and windows to building bespoke fitted furniture, kitchen units, wardrobes, and outdoor wooden structures. Finding a good one is worth the effort. Spanish carpentry at its best is excellent. Spanish carpentry at its worst is expensive and difficult to put right.
The challenge for expats is that carpentry quality is difficult to assess from a quote or a photograph. The difference between well-fitted and poorly fitted joinery often only becomes apparent months after the job is done, when doors start dropping, drawers stick, or fitted units begin to separate from walls.
What a Spanish carpenter typically covers
- Door and window fitting - internal and external, including new frames and replacement of existing
- Fitted wardrobes - built-in armarios empotrados are standard in Spanish properties and require a carpenter rather than a flat-pack approach
- Kitchen units - bespoke or semi-bespoke cabinetry made and fitted to measure
- Staircases - new builds and repairs to existing wooden staircases
- Wooden terrace structures - pergolas, louvred roofs, and outdoor seating areas
- Skirting boards and architraves - finishing work often overlooked but immediately visible in the finished result
- Repairs to existing joinery - doors that have dropped, windows that no longer close properly, fitted units that have come loose

What to check before hiring a carpenter in Spain
- Ask to see examples of completed fitted work, photographs of finished wardrobes or kitchens give you a genuine sense of their quality and attention to detail
- Ask whether they work with solid wood, MDF, or board materials, and whether the specification matches what you are paying for
- Confirm they can provide a proper invoice with their NIF and IVA included
- For outdoor wooden structures, ask specifically what timber species and treatment they use, untreated softwood deteriorates rapidly in the Mediterranean climate and is a false economy
- Check liability insurance is in place before any work begins
