Hiring a Bricklayer in Spain - What the Work Involves and What to Pay
What a bricklayer does in Spain and why the role is broader than most expats expect
In Spain, the albañil, the bricklayer, is a far more versatile tradesperson than their UK counterpart. A skilled albañil on the Costa del Sol typically handles not just blockwork and brickwork but also render, tile adhesive, partition walls, concrete work, drainage channels, and a range of general masonry tasks that in the UK would be split across multiple trades.
This versatility makes a good albañil an extremely useful person to have on a renovation project. It also means that the quality gap between an excellent albañil and a poor one is significant and shows up clearly in the finished work.
What work an albañil typically covers in Spain
- Blockwork and brickwork - internal and external walls, garden walls, boundary walls
- Render and plastering - lime render on exterior walls, cement render for wet areas
- Concrete work - foundations, slabs, retaining walls, steps and paths
- Partition walls - non-structural internal divisions using breeze block or brick
- Drainage channels and sumideros - particularly relevant for terraces and pool surrounds
- Fixing and pointing - stonework repairs, repointing mortar joints on older properties
- Tile adhesive and bed preparation - laying the base for tiled floors and walls before a tiler finishes
What bricklayer work costs in Spain
- Albañil day rate: €120 to €200 per day depending on experience and location
- Garden or boundary wall, blockwork, per metre run: €80 to €180 depending on height and specification
- Internal partition wall, per square metre: €40 to €80 including blockwork and render

What to check before hiring an albañil in Spain
- Ask for their NIF and confirm they can provide a proper invoice including IVA, legitimate tradespeople operating as autónomos or through a company will do this without hesitation
- Ask for references from recent masonry work in the local area, ideally work you can go and look at
- Check whether liability insurance is in place, a seguro de responsabilidad civil is important for any work that could affect neighbouring properties
- For exterior render, ask specifically what render system they use and whether it is appropriate for the Mediterranean climate breathable mineral render performs significantly better than cheap acrylic alternatives in the heat
